James D. Crowther, M.D., P.A.

James D. Crowther was born and raised in Oil City, Pennsylvania. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor in Science for his undergraduate studies and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine for his graduate studies, both at Pennsylvania State University. His post-graduate internship was in general surgery at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. His residency, also at the University of North Carolina Hospitals was in the department of orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Crowther is Board Certified in orthopedic surgery by the America Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a Diplomat to the ABOS. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons, the North Carolina Medical Society and is a Fellow of the AAOS. He is currently affiliated with Rex Hospital HealthPlex, Duke Raleigh Hospital, and WakeMed North HealthPlex.

Dr. Crowther spent four years on Active Duty upon completion of his residency at Chapel Hill. He served for the United States Navy and was stationed at the Groton Submarine Base in Connecticut. There he was a Lt. Commander who provided orthopedic services for both the Navy personnel and the United States Coast Guard Academy, where he was also the team physician for the athletic department. Dr. Crowther did spend time in the Middle East during Operation Enduring Freedom, supporting the Active Duty servicemen in Bahrain. Here in North Carolina he has participated in COAN which assists orthopedists in Nicaragua and hopes to become more involved in the future.

Dr. Crowther is married to Ginger, who was born and raised in Mississippi. They have three children Abbygayle, Hayden and Ridge. He enjoys a variety of outdoor activities. He has competed in numerous triathlons and marathons, including Boston. He is an avid cyclist, completing the Assault on Mount Mitchell in Western N.C. and yearly rides with a local team in the New Bern MS 150.

His primary interests lie in management of shoulder and knee related injuries, with a focus on arthroscopic techniques. His interests and practice also cover general orthopedic services, including fracture care, adult reconstruction and joint replacement, arthroscopy, and sports medicine.
